I had a great encounter with the mapping system even though I tend not to favor it for myself. For whatever reason, I simply prefer notes in linear form. However, I know that best practices say to do mapping, which tends to be a struggle for me. So, I was working with a small group of students on writing. I actually had one student in tears because he could not write his essay. Three days later, I was teaching his whole class about mapping (with the LearningSuccess Writing Program). He simply amazed me. He was writing! He had no idea that he was writing a paragraph but he was and he was so excited to be doing it. Mapping works.

My son is a reluctant writer. I started LearningSuccess writing this past year. He was up to lesson 11 and needed to do a documentary. Not wanting to go out and find one I searched in our collection of VHS tapes. I found a series on the history of Canada. I sent him off and said you only have to watch for 15 minutes. I want you to map out the four Ws.
About 45 minutes later I realized that he hadnt come back. So I went and found him and said you dont have to watch it all. He looked up and said, But Mom, this is so interesting.
He had all the four Ws filled out and was sitting with rapt attention.

I want to thank you very much for helping my daughter with writing. She was very resistant to any type of writing altogether. She was like a meteor hurling through space heading for a violent collision. She empathized with Harry Potters character who was being punished by being made to write in detention. For every quill stroke he made on his parchment, his hand would be sliced in kind. It was severe punishment.
You taught her mapping techniques and that writing can be very fun. She may not love writing yet, but I think everything is okay.
