I believe that, in order to make a contribution to music, one should lead with their strengths rather than shore up weaknesses to a uniform level of mediocrity. 

 

Information about Princeton University

In order to provide an opportunity for prospective graduate composition fellows to meet faculty and current students and participate in some departmental event such as a colloquium or concert, we host 3 open houses each fall. For 2010 these open houses will be on September 28, November 18 and December 14. For more information contact Gregg Smith – gsmith@princeton.edu

Current courses 

2010-11
Fall – Graduate Seminar: Composing For String Quartet. We are fortunate to have the Brentano String Quartet our Edward T. Cone ensemble-in-residence  join me for study, discussion and performance of works in their current touring repertoire and readings of work from seminar participants.

Spring
Undergraduate course: Orchestration. The course will study the potentials and idioms of instruments and ensembles. Guest will give demonstrations culminating in a reading of projects by the Princeton University orchestra.

Next year
I will be on sabbatical from teaching at Princeton University during the 2011/2012 academic year.

Outside of Princeton University

I will be the Karel Husa visiting composer at Ithaca College in Ithaca NY, making two visits – October 8-10 and April 10-12. These visits will include lectures, masterclasses, private teaching and performances of my music. 

I will also be leading a two-week project at the Tanglewood Music Center dates and topic TBD.

–Colloquium May 18 2011, UCLA.

Private Teaching

I do some limited private teaching outside of Princeton University. For a single 60-90 minute lesson the fee is $150.
