Disposal of dredged material

The disposal of dredged material below the mean high water springs mark requires a marine licence.

We will require you to take samples of the material to be disposed of which we will assess for contamination.

A marine licence will be granted only where there are no safe and practicable alternatives, for example, using the material to replenish beaches.

Disposal of dredged material by a harbour authority

There is an exemption for disposal done by or on behalf of a harbour authority which is authorised by a local act of Parliament or harbour order provided the material meets the requirements of the Waste Framework Directive.
