Thin Clients for our Computer Lab
May 15th, 2006I help run a computer lab with a mix of Pentium IIs and IIIs and while we’ve made greats strides in locking them down, keeping them as fast as possible, and managing them with AD, it’s still a challenge. I’ve been considering running them as thin clients with a basic linux distro designed for the job, and using anywhereTS to handle all the configuraiton. Anyone tried something like this before and gotten good results?

Unprotect Word Docs
May 15th, 2006I had to remove protection from some Word docs recently. I expected I’d have to use a small app, but turns out you can just edit the Microsoft Script-Editor.

Update Notifier for Firefox

Open Source Spam Killer: ASSP
May 15th, 2006It has a cool name, so it must be good. ASSP is platform-independent SMTP Proxy server which implements whitelists, Bayesian, and basic anti-virus filtering to stem the tide of Spam. I have a friend who implimented it and fell in love.

LaserJet 1100 Printer Repair (and other HP Models)
May 15th, 2006So I was lucky enough to stumble upon not one, but three LaserJet 1100 Printers sitting in the server room. When these bad boys first came out they suffered from a very minor but very annoying problem. The seperation pad and roll would go Kaboom after less then a year due. Perfecly good printers down the drain. Now at one point HP offered a free repair kit for them, but the deal is long past, so you’ll have to pick up the parts yourself and do the repair. After a bit of googling I found Feedroller, a great resource on HP printer repair. They offer kits, step by step instructions and even videos!
Useful stuff, as sometimes the repair process can get a bit involved.

VYEW.com - Free browser-based web meeting
April 18th, 2006VYEW.com - Free browser-based web meeting
Yeah yeah, I know. Another Web 2.0 company that may be gone in 2 months, but I have to say Vyew offers a fairly extensive feautre list, and incredibly fast time-to-work flow. Have a client on the phone who just can’t figure out what part of the design your refering to? Invite him into a shared meeting, screencap your desktop or a specific window, and start drawing right on it as he watches. There are way too many features to piddle around with right now but I’m going to keep my eye on this one.
Also, being free is nice.
