Overly Judgemental IE6 Splash Pages

spacer

spacer

Joe Lifrieri, of Hugs For Monsters, joked with his friend while designing his site about making highly confrontational splash pages for anyone using Internet Explorer 6. He, like myself, has more hate for Microsoft and their browser than should be humanly possible. These splash pages are a joke and weren’t used, but in a parallel universe it’d be so much fun to throw them up.

We at The Donut Project don’t actually think you’re a loser if you use IE6, but in all honesty, you probably should upgrade or switch to Firefox. View the rest after the jump…

View the rest – some of which are harsh enough that I didn’t wanna post them here – along with Joe’s kickass site, at hugsformonsters.com.

Edit: Joe has since taken down the rest of the IE6 splash pages from his site. You can read his post explaining why here. As with any work we feature, we intend to drive traffic to whoever made whatever inspired us, but since it’s no longer on his site, I have added the rest of the splash pages below.

just a shame so many companies are stuck with IE 6 due to project requirements.

I don’t think its actually users not wishing or knowing how to upgrade, its IT departments and software developers.

The web is held up by us having to develop with IE 6 still in mind, and it still holds a big chunk of browser stats.

How many more years do we have to suffer IE 6?
Considering we are now on v8, its going to be some time.

There have been so many times I have been tempted to use similar tactics on websites, when you go the trouble of doing something different, or just doing something development a few years ago, and IE 6 will mess it up.

You read the CSS3 spec’s and think those are great, can’t wait to use them, then you remember IE 6.

One thing worth remembering is that it your involvement in coding specifically for IE6 will depend mostly on your audience and web statistics. On this site, we hover around 2-3% IE6 users, so we’ve chosen not to support it for now.

When it’s the business world and entire companies are stuck on IE6, then it’s much more important.

I hope IE8 and beyond gets on the web standards train.

I’m sure that many current developers and designers don’t even know what Geocities is(was) :)

    But yeah, we’ve all been there… ehh…

P.S. funny. Offensive but funny :)

Umm, just because you are a company, and 2% of people who come by your site use IE6, this is NOT a reason to support it. Think about it for a minute, ok? First, if they are using IE6, they are also likely to not understand much about the web. In fact, it is pretty much a miracle they got to you at all. Second, they are also likely to have been infested with bots, viruses, and other malicious programs. There stands a reasonable chance that they are not even the ones using the browser, but that it has been hijacked! Either that, or they are using a slow, dial up connection. That means that if you have any complex stuff on your site (we are talking about complex for IE6 – jpeg files and the like), then they will not stay long enough to see your site anyways. The typical user will go elsewhere if the site takes over 9 seconds to load.

All you are doing by coding for this browser is enabling these people, and are helping them get taken advantage of by malware. Please don’t code for it! Instead please do the socially and morally responsible thing and make them upgrade, preferably to Firefox or something non-MS. Yeah, you might lose that sale to Nigeria, but you might also help someone stay safer.

The first two were funny and well, but everything after that went pretty hard down hill.

I know the flaming is coming, but really? IE6 must have slapped your baby or killed your mother or something. What else could cause so much disdain? Do you hate bill gates? Do you hate microsoft? Or are you just bitter because so many people use the browser?

I ask this from my FireFox browser, but really, why the disdain? Your grandmother probably uses IE6. Hell, your mom probably uses IE6 to watch her Pr0n.

I figured we non-IE people were too smart for IE rage anymore. Just let the poor saps get all the infections and wonder why their system’s been compromised and then sit their silently in your superiority. No need to shove it down their throat. It’s not like their going to change browsers anyway, Bill Gates hasn’t approved any changes in browsers…

#1 they are holding back the rest of the class.
#2 we don’t hate inanimate objects like CEOs and corporations we hate having to fellate IE6 when there are perfectly good browsers that reduce our development costs three fold

I haven’t read so much self-righteous bitter (and pointless) rage in my entire life. Joe and most of the cheerleading asswipes here must be tons of fun at parties. There are far worse things in the world that deserve your anger.

I can’t speak for Joe or the other flamboyant diaper rags, but we’re tons of fun at parties! Spend a day’s worth of work fixing code for a browser that shouldn’t still exist and you’ll feel the rage.

Dalia, imagine if there were still cars on the road today from 1910 and all roads had to be designed to accommodate them, and nobody could drive faster than those car’s top speed.

    This is really sad.
Who gives a fuck what browser someone uses.
Some people have lives and don’t need a browser that tends to computer junkies.

Maybe they use the internet every now and then.. and play sport… and have sex with women.
