Get Started

Thinking about getting started in fencing, or just want to come see what it’s all about? Come on out! Below, you’ll find all kinds of details for beginners. If you don’t find your answer below, feel free to contact us and ask. To learn more about the Rise philosophy and how we like to run our classes, check out that page.

Who
You! Fencing is great exercise and entertainment for the whole family! The only consideration would be whether the student could respect and wield a sword. We currently have students of all ages, from 9 to 60+

Beginning fencers will learn the basic fencing stance (en garde), advance, retreat, lunge, basic parries and riposte. The emphasis is on developing strong basic skills. Masks, sabres and jackets are provided.

Intermediate fencers will have more of a focus on bouting strategies and techniques and will spend more time fencing the instructor and each other. Emphasis will also be placed on learning to judge a bout. The fencers will fence electric bout.

What Weapons
Here at the RFA we specialize in the weapon Sabre. All new students are introduced to this weapon. Sabre is the only sword in the fencing repertoire that allows for cutting and stabbing movements of the blade. Hence, Sabre fencing is very fast and aggressive, with much focus on speed and precision.

When
We have classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:00 to 8:30pm.

Where
Rockwall Indoor Sports Expo in Rockwall. Our space is closest to the back door. See our contact page for a map and driving directions.

How Much
Monthly tuition is $75/month/student. We have special family discounts that include $10 off for the second family member while the third fences free! All necessary equipment is provided, though it is highly recommended that each student is able to purchase their own equipment after the first two months.

What Gear
For more detailed information and tips on what to buy and how, check out our gear page. Otherwise, here’s a quick rundown of what every fencer needs.

  • Mask
  • Jacket
  • Underarm protector (Plastron) (if Jacket is not padded)
  • Chest guard (required for women, strongly encouraged for girls)

Where to Get Gear
We can order equipment for you, of if you’d like to do it yourself, we recommend:

There are others out there, but we’ve been very happy with the equipment we’ve received from the vendors above. (If you know of someplace in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, or can recommended additional suppliers, let us know.)

Rules
Sound fun & easy? It is!
Are there rules? Of course!
Fencing could be a dangerous sport but we emphasize safety in everything we do.
Here are the rules, for the record:

1. Safety first! Absolutely NO HORSEPLAY with weapons!
2. Weapons should be carried with point toward the floor or ceiling unless actively fencing.
3. Masks must be worn AT ALL TIMES when fencing or practicing with weapons.
4. Fence in control! Violent fencing actions are not permitted. Rough bodily contact (corps-a-corps) is not permitted.
5. If you think a weapon is broken, stop fencing immediately, retreat and wave your unarmed hand. Stop fencing immediately if your opponent gives this sign or gives any sign of wanting to stop.
6. Pay attention to your surroundings! When people are fencing, walk next to walls to move around the room. Do not walk between fencers.
7. Be respectful! Answer adults with “Yes, sir” and “Yes, ma’am”. Maintain eye contact when an instructor is speaking to you.
8. If you feel that someone is behaving in a dangerous fashion, report it privately to an instructor. Your identity will not be disclosed.
