NOW EXTENDED UNTIL APRIL 22ND BY POPULAR DEMAND! “A Bright Room Called Day” follows a group of artists and activists struggling for love and meaning in 1930s Berlin, as Germany surrenders to the seduction of fascism.

In her cozy one-bedroom apartment, Agnes Eggling (Xanadu Bruggers) provides comfort from the brewing storm for actors, revolutionaries, homosexuals, and communists as the Nazis begin to consolidate power. As the darkness threatens her small circle of friends, Agnes must try to hold them all together, even as outside forces, including the supernatural, try to invade her bright room called day.

Kushner also “interrupts” his historical play with the passionate outpourings of Zillah (Maggie Ballard), a slightly paranoid and extremely passionate American Jew, sifting through the past in contemporary Berlin. By the end of this tale, time and place will blur into one, and our own democracy may seem less secure than it once was.Tony Kushner’s first play is a lyrical, savagely funny piece of theatre that is both a warning cry for the future, as well as a remembrance of an apocalypse that was anything but inevitable.

Examiner.com’s Charles Kruger calls BRIGHT ROOM “gripping”!

Another review today, and just as amazing!  Charles Kruger from Examiner.com has a lot to say about the politics and relevance of Kushner’s play, and what it means today.  Plus he called it “gripping”, and that Custom Made is “one of the groups leading the way”  with the “a reawakening of the importance of history and politics in the theatre.” We couldn’t agree more. The reviews have started to roll in.  Here’s BeyondChron.com’s Lee Hartgrave on A Bright Room Called Day  It is a heck of a rave, here’s a highlight and then click the link below to read more! “This is a play that is masterfully explosive. The political fiction can be very scary in this amazing gorgeous scenario. Kushner has a knack for words, as his play jumps around from poetry to prose …. The story is riveting, as it brings out all the human foibles that you can carry in a German bag of tricks in 1932....

Arts In America blog features BRIGHT ROOM today.  Nice, short article and nothing wrong with saying we dazzle! “But whether he’s writing for the stage or for film, Kushner’s commitment to challenging his audiences, and his habit of introducing innovative juxtapositions of plot, continue to inspire.” artsamerica.org/blog/location/a-bright-room-called-day-dazzles-san-francisco/ Share this:

Nice to wake up this morning to see our Agnes (Xanadu Bruggers) on the cover of 96 hours, the San Francisco Chronicle’s “what to do this weekend” section! Most of the article is from an interview with me, although some of the facts about the version have gotten confused.  I’m planning on posting the Q&A soon…. Here’s an excerpt and be sure to click the link to read the whole article. “By the end of the play, time becomes ethereal, and we are left neither here nor there,” Katz says. “It...

Late Night Photos from our Cue-to-Cue

Our fanatastic video designer, Maxx Kruzunski, shot some stills at our final day of cue to cue.  Bright Room is an extremely complex show, which we plan on making look simple and seamless, so this took two days of stopping, adjusting, composing, video rendering, and concentration from the actors.  But we got through it.  At last look there are about 200 light cues, 90 sound cues, and 55 video cues. Here’s some shots, enjoy! [Show as slideshow]

This is a big weekend for the Bright Room cast. It’s our first run through! It’s going to be a “rough draft” if you will, but I’m very excited to see how it’s all shaping up. This is actually going to be the first time I’ve seen some of the other actors in rehearsal since the reading in January. Because of the way this play is set up, the rehearsal process has basically been broken down into three groups (and please note that these are the names that I have given these groups to help explain them): the “modern day” group,...

    Tony’s AIDS Prayer

I was made aware of this prayer by Custom Made’s intrepid Artistic Director (and the director of our upcoming Production of A Bright Room Called Day), Brian Katz.  It is the AIDS Prayer written by Tony Kushner in 1994, for The National Day of Prayer for AIDS. First, here is a link to the first minute of Mr. Kushner’s Prayer, read by Meryl Streep (from the documentary Wrestling with Angels): Tony’s AIDS Prayer And here is the full text of the prayer: Dearly Beloved, Let us pray. God: A cure would be nice. Rid those infected...
