Statement
: My work investigates painting, abstraction and modernism through a non-painter approach. Trained as a photographer, the formal and dimensional qualities of painting were always fascinating, but the romanticism of paint never wooed me. Recreating similar qualities through alternative and found materials allows a play and unpredictability in the pieces. The composition is allowed to develop faster, and success and failures make themselves known and often require a creative fix.
Images are constructed and built, torn down, painted out and reconfigured to find a surface that rests between painting, collage and drawing. In my newer work, I have been looking at yarn as a line-weight, and mark making material, as well as a similarly modeled texture to tube-paint. Long lines form new angles in the compositions, and looser pieces invite shadow and depth to become part of the piece. Drawing the yarn across the composition, and creating additional tension by pulling it off the surface or into the panels give the pieces a sense of balance that could break or unravel.
