HOW TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN RELATIONSHIPS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

Everyone knows that relationships are key to a successful career in the music industry, but where do you start?

In this seminar we will discuss the proper ways to approach music industry personnel, addressing common fears, mistakes, and obstacles. Topics will include initial contact, means to find personnel to add to your team, when to follow up, and how to build relationships.*At this seminar, we will draw 10 names of attending, current members, to win exclusive one-on-one mentoring sessions at the SchMusic BC Party the following Monday.

Ron Proulx – Music Supervisor/Arpix Media
Ron Proulx has owned Canada’s leading music supervision company Arpix Media since 1997, handling all creative, music budgets, and music business affairs on countless productions for clients like Shaftesbury (Murdoch Mysteries), 724 Films (Heartland), and Pink Sky (Flashpoint). He also manages several composers. His IMDB listing can be found here.

Ron is also co-owner of The Rights Company, an intellectual property research and clearance company specializing in script reports for film and tv. He is the author of two ebooks, the most recent being “hownot2suck @ businessnbeing” – a handbook for young entrepreneurs – as well as the guide to music licensing “How To License Your Music Into Movies and Television”.

He has produced several music videos over the years, including those for his 80′s band Picture Comes To Life (BMG), as well as several short films which are available on Youtube @ducktube2000. Additionally, Ron was Associate Producer on the HBO film Xchange(directed by Allan Moyle – Pump Up The Volume). He has been a guest speaker at countless music and media events, and he is an Advisory Board member of both the New Media Film Festival and the Vancouver Island Music Business Conference. His voracious interest in digital and mobile media led him to launch Podzapper Inc to produce both programming and applications for the digital space. Developments in this area are forthcoming.

Nick Blasko ­- Manager/Amelia Artists
Amelia Artists was originally formed in 2002 to support the early career and development of present day client Tegan and Sara, the operation and roster has expanded over the last 9 years to include Buck 65, Jets Overhead and the ongoing mentorship of several developing artists such as Gold & Youth and FlashLightnin’. Based in Victoria BC, the company is known for its strong network of US and international colleagues, making possible the development and maintenance of truly global careers for Canadian artists. Plans are in the works for a satellite office in New York, NY come Spring of 2012.

Shaun Verreault ­- Artist/Wide Mouth Mason
Best known as the virtuosic singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer for Wide Mouth Mason, Shaun Verreault is also an in demand co-writer, clinician, producer and public speaker.

In between tours with The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, and headlining shows as far away as China (where WMM was the first North American rock band to tour the mainland), Afghanistan and the Middle East, Shaun has released two solo records, “The Daggerlip Sketches” and “Two Steel Strings” which was recorded on a vintage train as it crossed Canada.

Joelle May ­- Publicist/Mod May Promotions
A devoted music-lover, Joelle May uses her creative and friendly nature, extensive contact list and musical knowledge, combined with her organizational skills and attention to detail to facilitate the publicity needs of various bands
and artists. Joelle covers all of Canada, parts of the US and her contact list extends to Europe and Australia as well. Joelle entices key people to want your story, and will portray it the way you desire your audience to hear it.

Involving herself as much as possible, Joelle has built her positive repertoire since 2007 through individual work with various artists, bands, record labels and music distributors, as well as her role as Canadian Coordinator for Folk Alliance International, and contracts such as the Young Songwriters Intensive weekend put on by the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts in Calgary. She is also a member of Alberta Music, Music BC, CARAS and is a board member, artist liaison and publicist for the Mountain View Music Festival, taking place annually in Carstairs, AB, on the second weekend in August.
