Town of Blacksburg Spring Cleanup

March 19, 2012 - April 13, 2012 time: All day
The Town of Blacksburg Spring Cleanup pickup is scheduled as follows:

  • Northeast Quadrant (Thursday refuse and recycling service): Week of March 19
  • Northwest Quadrant (Tuesday refuse and recycling service): Week of March 26
  • Southwest Quadrant (Friday refuse and recycling service): Week of April 2
  • Southeast Quadrant (Monday refuse and recycling service): Week of April 9
Brush, metal appliances, tires, and other debris must be placed curbside in separate piles by 7am on the Monday of your collection week. Collection services are available to residential refuse and recycling customers only. For a list of prohibited items and more information be sure to check Town of Blacksburg Public Works: Spring and Fall Cleanup or call 540-961-1142.

Stadium Woods Walk

April 9, 2012 time: 6pm until 8pm location: Cranwell International Center
NRV Master Gardeners are hosting Dr. John Seiler, Honorable and Mrs. S.H. Short Professor of Forestry as he guides us through Stadium Woods on Monday, April 9, pointing out the diversity and unique aspects of this centuries-old woodland. Meet at the Cranwell International Center parking lot. Due to an event at the Center, please park in either the Cassell Coliseum or Southgate Drive parking lot. No permits are necessary after 5pm for these lots. Email lbrammer@vt.edu for more information.

Laurie Anderson's DIRTDAY!

April 10, 2012 time: 8pm location: Squires Haymarket Theatre
Sponsored by the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech, in collaboration with the School of Performing Arts and Cinema and The Center for the Arts, Laurie Anderson looks at politics, theories of evolution, families, history and animals in this riotous and soulful collection of songs and stories. A Servant of Two Masters

A continuation of Director David Johnson's ongoing work with students in Commedia dell'arte, this new translation/adaptation of the 18th century comedy and farce will be re-envisioned for a 21st century audience! April 12-14 at 7:30 pm; April 14, 15 at 2:00 pm.; April 17-20 at 7:30 pm; April 21 at 2:00 and 7:30 pm. VT Music Guest Artist Recital: Omri Shimron, piano

April 14, 2012 time: 8pm location: Squires Recital Salon
Omri Shimron's work represents a range of musical interests spanning multiple specialties. A pianist by training, Shimron is a prolific performer whose repertoire choices are traditional yet increasingly contemporary. Numerous collaborative and solo concerts have included sessions for WBFO and WXXI radio, the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and the Sundays on the Island series in New York City. Venturing outside the US, he has given concerts at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France, Wolfson College at Oxford University, the Bursa State Conservatory, Turkey and the SoundsCAPE festival in Pavia, Italy (2008). Blacksburg Community Band 23rd Anniversary Spring Concert

April 15, 2012 time: 4:00 pm location: Blacksburg High School (Price's Fork Road)
The Blacksburg Community Band, under the direction of Ed Schwartz, will present its 23rd Anniversary Spring Concert on April 15th at Blacksburg High School. A reception to meet the band will follow the concert. This concert will feature Dr. Joe Blaha performing the Canzonetta for Euphonium and Band by Raphel Fortza, in memory of long-time band member and euphonium player, Seth Williamson. Other music featured will include a new work by the band's Associate Conductor, Steven Brown, King in Yellow, and an original work by John Howell, Variations on a Hymn Theme, that depicts the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. Mr. Howell will also conduct his new arrangement of Peter Pan: Selections for Concert Band. The band will also welcome Jay Durner conducting Sousa's Easter Monday on the White House Lawn.

University Jazz Ensembles Concert

April 19, 2012 time: 8pm location: Squires Recital Salon
The University Jazz bands present an evening concert. Student Ensemble Concerts are $5 general, $3 senior, and $3 student. Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance. See the VT Department of Music Performance Calendar for information on this and more Department of Music events.
