The Relationship Ride

The voyage of relationship allows us to test our mettle with an endless variety of challenges—from rough seas and violent storms to no wind and too much calm. Through our relationships, we become seasoned sailors so that when we come into that final harbor at the end of our lives, we’ve discovered who we really are, and we have fully lived out our potential. Choosing this course means steering into the world of possibility, where we can ride the waves and run before the wind, charting a course to the relationship of our dreams.
The Relationship Ride, by Julia Colwell, Ph.D.

The Relationship Ride: A Usable, Unusual, Transformative Guide, is a playful exploration of the process of falling in love, launching into coupledom, and then hitting storms and running aground with power struggles that are inevitable in any relationship. The Relationship Ride dissects these power struggles to show how they are brought about by the human brain’s reliance on primitive responses to threat.

The Relationship Ride gives a fresh, original perspective about what to expect from intimacy, using an ongoing metaphor of becoming skilled at staying on the relation-ship by learning:

  • to use maps (to one’s inner state and the state of the relationship) and a compass (for getting one’s bearings and setting a course)
  • to apply powerful tools to shift one’s inner state out of contraction and into expansion
  • how to drain emotional bilge, plug energetic leaks, and ride the strong wind that being honest and transparent provides
  • what to do when the relationship runs aground because of power struggle; how to get moving again
  • how to steer through the storms of old unconscious patterns and handle the monsters of the deep, the threatened animal selves that will inevitably show up

Hey Julie,

Michelle, my partner, and I were at therapy today with Joni Davis when she took us on the inner map journey which your book describes. Joni called it “storytime” and she read parts of the book to us while checking to find out where we thought we were individually on the map. We have laminated 2 pictures of the map from your book and both of us are very excited about reading The Relationship Ride. We have been together 20 years and are ready to take this ride into the next phase of our journey together. Thanks for creating such an amazing tool!

Hi Robin,

Oh, I LOVE this! Thanks for taking the time to let me know how this is working for you. I don’t know if you know you can download a colored version of the map–and the other tools– on my website (click on the Relationship Ride/Duffle Bag). You can also download a free chapter of The Relationship Ride, or even order a copy!
