Gamification Primer | Gabe Zichermann [Video]

by Maximilian Lemos on April 5, 2012

spacer Gabe Zichermann is an exceptional speaker and quite engaging. His thoughts on gamification are clear and his mastery of the subject is very apparent. If I had to recommend a video on gamification to someone new to the subject it would be this one. His anecdotes are often funny and well thought-out, which definitely helps understanding.

Set aside some time and watch this video, I guarantee you will be entertained and learn a whole lot about gamification.

I especially enjoyed his historical exploration of gamification and his break down of the gamification loop. Enjoy!

Gamified Road Signs Give Drivers Better Feedback

by Maximilian Lemos on April 2, 2012

spacer Here is a brilliant example of practical Gamification out in the wild. While in Céret, a small town in the south of France, Chris Foley (Co-founder of 42 Terabytes) and I noticed a simple and effective example of Gamification. Like many towns all over the world, road signs that track your speed are an effective way of keeping roadways safe, but Céret takes a step further by using signs that give you positive and negative feedback, awarding a happy or a sad face, depending on your speed.  This feedback has proven to be a successful means of regulating speed because drivers are more likely to react when given a a simple reward, like a Smiley Face. Pretty cleaver, huh?

Below is an example of these speed signs and an article that explains their effectiveness.    [click to continue…]

Subtle Gamification | Coke’s ‘Happiness Refill’ Dispenses Internet Access

by Maximilian Lemos on April 1, 2012

spacer Meet the Coke Wi-fi dispenser. This is a perfect example of Gamification and yet it has absolutely nothing to do with badges. What an industry shaking concept!

People forget that Gamification is about guiding customer impulse. Sure you can wag a prize in their face, but how did you get them their? Coke’s Wi-Fi machine indeed has a prize at the end, but they also have a novel way of encouraging engagement and that’s a purer use of Gamification.

My favorite aspect? It’s subtle and far from your average example of Gamification. The world needs more innovative Gamification and this idea from Coke is far from cookie cutter.
