Taxes, Taxes, Taxes

Have you finished your taxes? I have! Normally I am finished way before this and already enjoying my refund of 2 new shiny quarters. But with selling a house, moving, buying a new house, switching jobs, and everything else it has taken me a little longer. (Plus I have been lazy). Well this year I will only get 2 new shiny pennies, but I guess that is better than nothing. It is amazing how complicated some of this can be.

Riding around the Island

So my kids and I have been going on bike rides around Daniel Island almost every week this year. We have missed a few weekends due to traveling or rain, but for the most part we get out there for a couple of hours and rode. The last time we were out we took the camera and snapped a few photos.

Not happy with Lowe's

So a couple weeks ago we bought a new washer and dryer from Lowe's. The only reason we got it from there is because I had a 10% coupon, and if you know me you know I love to save money. (If you do not believe me ask the Boxely team about paying $1.01 for a Coke.)
We bought the Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer pair. We really like our washer and dryer, but I am very unsatisfied with Lowe's. They did not bring out everything we bought. They brought the wash/dryer, but not the pedestals. After many, many calls to them, and finally driving to the store and talking with the store manager we got everything. In the end it turned out they had deleted us from their system. They did not even know they were to deliver anything else. I am not too happy with Lowe’s right now. My advice to everyone, shop at Home Depot!

Moving In

So closing on our new house went fine. The movers got all of our stuff in, and now we are unpacking all the boxes. It is amazing how much stuff we have. I can see some of the stuff either donated or trashed. Yesterday we had the telephone, cable, and internet connections installed. On Daniel Island everyone has fiber running to their house. After a few quick speed test I am getting over 3 megs downstream and about 2.9 meg upstream for my internet connection. A lot better than what I had with Adelphia in VA. Let's hope it stays that way. The kids started in their new school today. They seem to like it so far. Well, I guess it is time to unpack another box. At this rate we will be done sometime this summer.

One down, one to go

On Wednesday we closed on our home in VA. (selling it) So currently I am homeless, but not for long. Today we close on our new home here on Daniel Island, South Carolina. Lots of stuff happening today: Closing on the new home, movers moving our stuff in, and Clemson is playing in the Music City Bowl game.

Moving on (Part 3) - Selling the House

So I told you all about selling our house in VA in part 2, now it was time to buy a new house in South Carolina. We drove down to Charleston, SC the week of Thanksgiving and started looking for a place to live. Our search criterion was very simple: 1. access to good schools, 2. close to work, 3. safe community, and 4. access to deep water. Ok, access to deep water was not one of them.

We started on Saturday morning, and by that night we had narrowed our search down to basically 4 communities: Dunes West, Park West, Brickyard, and Daniel Island. By Monday afternoon we had narrowed our list down to 1 home in Dunes West and 2 homes on Daniel Island. The discussion were starting to get a lot harder now. Both were great communities, safe, close to work, and had access to good school. (and access to deep water.)

On Tuesday afternoon we decided we wanted one of the 2 homes on Daniel Island. The one we chose was a new home built by David Weekly. They were just finishing it up. It's a traditional home located close to ponds and walking trails. The kids will be able to walk or ride their bikes to school. It includes multi-piece crown molding, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and a screened rear porch. It has a detached 2 car garage with a finished room above, including a full bath. This will be the guest suite. Make reservation soon, because we are filling up quick.

It has been very stressful getting all the paper work and contracts done. It is not easy closing on 2 houses only days and 600 miles apart. That said, I really like the house and the community that we chose. I cannot wait to go fishing at the nearby ponds and ride my bike on the trails with the kids.

Well, no more shoveling snow. Now we only have to worry about hurricanes.
