Inspired by the PirateBox project by David Darts, LibraryBox is a self-contained digital resource sharing device. LibraryBox utilizes Free, Libre and Open Source software (FLOSS) to create mobile wireless file access networks where users can download digital content.

PirateBox, and thus LibraryBox, is designed to be safe and secure. No logins are required and no user data is logged. The system is purposely not connected to the Internet in order to prevent tracking and preserve user privacy.

LibraryBox is a fork of PirateBox for the TP-Link MR 3020, customized to be friendly to Library needs. LibraryBox was conceived and created by Jason Griffey.

Equipment

The core of the LibraryBox is a TP-Link MR3020 Wireless N router, available from Newegg for only $39.99. The MR3020 runs on standard USB power, and so can be driven from a variety of power sources. In my tests, a 6500 MWh battery pack designed for the iPad ran the MR3020 for almost 16 hours.

Future

There are lots of possibilities with further development: autonomous auto-syncing Project Gutenberg servers, digital library download stations anywhere, delivery of other types of media content (hyperlocal video delivery). I would love to find people interested in working on some of these projects...contact me!
