Draper Aden Associates provided structural engineering services in a student led project to design and build a farmer's market shelter for the city of Covington with sustainability being a priority. The shelter was constructed with goods produced within a 100 mile radius of the market and recycled materials were used when available. Featured are custom fabricated wood trusses, cantilevered steel tube columns, reinforced concrete footings and a concrete slab with wood joist floors. The project incorporated a rain water collection system, LED lighting and natural ventilation. The roof was designed with an inverted ceiling to facilitate stack effect ventilation and a 1,200 gallon cistern collects water from the roof and is used for landscaping and toilets. This project was awarded a 2011 Design Excellence Merit Award from the Virginia Society AIA. It received a merit award for the Exterior Use of Wood in February 2012 by WoodWorks, an inititive of the Wood Products Council.
