THE GREAT ROCK AND ROLL SWINDLE

Thursday, June 7th, 7:30pm

The Sex Pistols star in director Julien Temple’s bizarre and hilarious fictional documentary that charts the rise and fall of punk’s most notorious band through the eyes of its calculating manager, Malcolm McLaren. Mixing animation and midgets with footage of some of The Pistols’ most electrifying live performances, the 1980 film presents the band’s success as an elaborate scam perpetrated by McLaren to make "a million pounds" at the expense of record companies, outraged moralists, the British Royal Family—and even the fans and band members themselves.

The Great Rock Rock ’n’ Roll Swindle was called "a parable of our times" by the Guardian (UK), but most music fans simply consider it one of the best rock films ever. More than 25 years after their breakup, The Sex Pistols’ music continues to influence punk and post-punk bands the world over. The Great Rock ’n’ Roll Swindle shows why.

Following the film, there will be a LIVE concert celebrating the filth and the fury of the Sex Pistols.

JOHHNY CASH AT FOLSOM PRISON

An Evening of Film and Music Celebrating The Man in Black

Friday, June 8th. 7:30pm

Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison is a documentary which examines Cash's 1968 concert at Folsom State Prison in California and the ensuing album that became a symbol of the late 1960s and transformed his career. Drawing from rock photographer Jim Marshall's stark images of that day, rare archival footage, as well as exclusive interviews with participants and observers, the film traces Cash's rocky road that led to the concert and the torrent of stardom and political debate that came after it. This film exposes a lesser known "Man in Black," forever defined by darkness and light.

Following the film, there will be a special performance by "The Spirit of Johnny Cash" Live! Unplugged & personal, the evening includes a rare solo performance by Johnny Cash tribute artist Harold Ford performing songs featured in the film and other Cash hits.

” . . . with a deep, bass-baritone voice and mournful eyes, Harold Ford could be the doppelganger of “The Man in Black” . . . isn’t a Johnny Cash impersonator. For Ford, singing like Cash just comes naturally . . . ”
Doug Gruse, The PostStar

KRISTIN HERSH - PARADOXICAL UNDRESSING

Saturday, June 9, 7:30pm

Best known as the founder of seminal American art rock band Throwing Muses, Kristin Hersh presents a riveting solo spoken word and musical performance drawn from her acclaimed memoir, Rat Girl (published by Penguin USA), recalling a year in the life of a teenage girl wrestling with issues of mental illness, creativity, teenage pregnancy and the pressures of sudden fame.

Often quite funny, at times harrowing and always candid, this wry and vivid work characterizes Hersh’s double life as a cripplingly shy artist who is simultaneously recognized for her brutal honesty in the spotlight.

Combining film, music and a scripted narrative excerpted from the book, the show is a singularly intense, moving and thoroughly original experience, the impact of which continues to resonate long after the show ends.

An intimate discussion and Q&A with Kristin will follow the show.

Presented during SaratogaArtsFest by Saratoga Arts and the Saratoga Film Forum, with the support of a SaratogaArtsFest Partner Program Enhancement Grant and the Nordlys Foundation.

THUNDER SOUL

June 10th, 7:30

Houston's legendary Kashmere Stage Band reunites in this funky, soulful, award-winning film. In an amazing testament to the power of music and teachers, the group comes back together after more than 30 years to pay tribute to their band-leader and mentor in what is sure to be one of the most beloved, and rump-shaking, docs of the year.

After the film there will be a LIVE concert by Los Elk - An energized indie rock/funk group from Skidmore College. Their goal is to get you dancing!

"Sometimes you just can't fight the funk; as much as you might resist the film's more maudlin scenes, not succumbing to the band's signature tune, "Head Wiggle," is impossible." - The Village Voice

"Music has rarely appeared more essential to the human drama." - The Austin Chronicle

"A greater argument for music education in our secondary school curriculum can't be made than Mark Landsman's doc about a Texas high school funk band that tore up the music scene from 1968 to 1977." - The Hollywood Reporter
