April 21-June 9, 2012: PETUNIA Rouses the Eastern Half of Canada

April 9th, 2012 . by Mod May

The Crickets are Calling You…

If you haven’t heard of Petunia yet, you’re in for a world of discovery! Simply put, people who see Petunia, love him. Personally, I can’t say enough about him and I write this with as much of my own gushy fandom as I do from the perspective of a publicist. I’ve actually written “You’re going to love this one” to tastemakers and broadcasters, and they’ve come back saying “You’re right, I do love this.” Nuff said. Seeing Petunia live, you’ll dance, you’ll shiver, you might cry, and you’ll definitely stomp your boots and sing along. This isn’t just another country show, Petunia appeals to every taste, from the most hardcore punk fans to the purest oldtime enthusiasts and swing kids, with the rockabilly crowd dancing between your grandma and grandpa. It’s a hillbilly-flavoured-swing-inflected-ragtime-goodtime-thunderously-rolling-one-of-a-kind-you-don’t-want-to-miss-this-sort-of-a-show! Here’s a VIDEO from a recent solo show at the Ironwood in Calgary.

Petunia will be traveling throughout Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes April thru June, playing with a range of accompanists, so hustle yourself to a show! And if you’re not in those areas, don’t despair, this rambling man is headed through the Canadian prairies, BC and down the west coast of the US through the summer, more shows HERE, both with and without “The Vipers”. You’ll love capturing a performance from this undiscovered treasure, who’ll rope you in to the corral of his legions of fans.

Petunia & The Vipers…
A rich high & lonesome sound, a country-swing beat, ferocious screams and yodels, and a bit of a twisted rockabilly edge are the some words one might say of a Petunia performance, but this only scratches the surface of Petunia as a songwriter, musician, and a world traveler. Imagine that David Lynch and Nick Cave had a hillbilly baby, that yodeled…or Tom Waits meets Elvis at Woody Guthrie’s hobo junction. He’s an adventure seeker, living life without fear. Starting from a rural Quebec upbringing, he’s played every major street corner across Canada and in New York, before graduating to full fledged touring musician complete with his band The Vipers. Petunia is simply an undiscovered Canadian treasure joining the greats from north of the 49th.

“Impressive stuff – this may well be the Vancouver roots music release of the year.”
Al MacInnis, The Georgia Straight

spacer The Petunia & The Vipers release is a sumptuous collection of all that is Petunia and it’s been earning rave reviews. With rockabilly, country, swing, sweet melodic ballads, and just the right amount of vibrato, it leaves you wanting to start back at the beginning as soon as you finish listening to it. Recorded at The Sound Factory in Hollywood, CA, Petunia & The Vipers was produced by Petunia & Phil Sgriccia, and mixed by Marc L’Esperance with additional recording at Heavyosonic in Vancouver. It was mastered by Bernie Grundman, who also mastered Tom Waits’ latest recording, and it’s available on vinyl, CD and for download.

Stewart Brennan, The Minstral Show
Vancouver’s Redgy Blackout, 2011 Peak Performance Project Top 20 band, are ready for you Toronto! This rockin’ duo (complete with rhythm section) have been developing cabin fever from the winter blues, so they’re looking to create some adventure in Toronto, with their upbeat, intricate and danceable roots-rock. Showcasing at Canadian Music Week many other top notch bands, Redgy Blackout are looking forward to connecting with their kind, and popping up within a whole new contingent of the Canadian music scene! Come on down to their showcase at The Sister, March 21st to get the CMW party started on the right dancing foot! The band would love to meet you, and will have plenty of swag and swill to go with the show. Show Redgy Blackout what you’re made of, CMW, they wanna know!

“I’m on my fifth straight listen to Redgy Blackout and I’m knocked out…This is the stuff I live for; songs revolving around melody and harmony pulled off without a hitch.”
Frank Gutch Jr., F.A.M.E Review

Redgy Blackout is the cream of the up and coming indie roots-rock artists. Like every other band, they write songs, they sing and play instruments, and they tour the nation, but Redgy Blackout stands apart in their passion, animation and energy. They’ve caught a lot of notice with their latest EP, and Singer and multi-instrumentalist Scott Perrie and guitar/banjo player Jeremy Breaks have been perfecting their collaborative craft since they met at an open jam in Vancouver, Perrie entering the music realm early through the theatre and his grandfathers ’61 Gibson J45, and Breaks through growing up in his father’s music store in Prince George. Their musical vision came together with their 2009 debut The Leap, and in 2010 they recorded an EP, entitled Meet You On The Other Side with the popular upbeat track “Like Penguins Do”. Their latest self titled EPwas released in July 2011, produced by Elisa Pangsaeng, mixed by Tom Dobrzanski (Said The Whale, The Zolas) and recorded at Vertical and Blue Wave Studios in Vancouver. In exchange for studio time, members of the band got together to help build a new studio for Dobrzanski. The EP has been getting glowing reviews, and is being played on radio across Canada, CBC and Galaxie Digital Radio.

“This latest EP is a varied mix of styles that I found most appealing. Especially the reflective When You Were A Kid with banjo plucking away in the background, an occasional harmonica and heartfelt vocals. There’s even more passion to be heard in Midnight Lights, a mainly stripped-back acoustic number and the heartfelt Once Knew You.”
