Puma Wins Southern Ocean Leg of Volvo Ocean Race
After more then 7,500 nautical miles of racing from Auckland, starting with a first-night battering as bad as any in the race’s history and on through brutal conditions in the Southern Ocean and around Cape Horn, PUMA’s Mar Mostro crossed the Itajaí finish in brilliant sunshine at 16:09:51 local time (19:09:51 UTC) to take their first victory of the 2011-12 edition. Anna Tunnicliffe Wins Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta
Palma de Mallorca, Spain (April 7, 2012) – The final day of racing at Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta saw NYYC member Anna Tunnicliffe take the gold medal in Women's Match Racing. Tunnicliffe’s “Team Maclaren” of Molly Vandemoer and Debbie Capozzi won the final match against Claire Leroy (FRA). After a very light-wind week of racing, today’s 20-knot wind and huge seas put a premium on conditioning for the all-out sprint style of medal race formats. “We are very happy,” said Tunnicliffe. “It’s been a great week. Molly and Debbie did a fabulous job getting the boat going fast and pointing us in the right direction, and Dell giving us all the information we needed between the races. Claire is a great competitor. We really enjoy sailing against her. We’re psyched where we are in our training. We have a long way to go until our Trials and hopefully the Olympics.” View More

Competitive racing, beautiful Miami weather, great wind, and one of the best sailing venues on the planet resulted in high stakes in the U.S. Etchells Class National Championship. Thirty-seven talented teams from seven countries took part in the three-day regatta hosted by Coral Reef Yacht Club and Mount Gay Rum. Competitors traveled from as far away as New Zealand and China to sail eight races in challenging light to medium conditions with the goal of capturing this year’s National Championship held in combination with the annual Etchells Coral Reef Cup.

Announcing the Transatlantic Race 2015

(February 2, 2012) – The six members of the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Team – Sailing were selected based on performances at US Sailing’s 2012 Rolex Miami OCR, held Jan. 23-28, 2012, in Miami, Fla., and the IFDS Worlds held two weeks earlier in Port Charlotte, Fla. As the top-scoring eligible American athletes in their respective Paralympic sailing classes, Jen French and JP Creignou, Mark LeBlanc, and NYYC member and trustee Paul Callahan, Tom Brown and Bradley Johnson have successfully completed qualification. US Sailing's Olympic Sailing Committee will officially nominate the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Team - Sailing, pending approval from the U.S. Olympic Committee. (January 11, 2012) – Etchells World Champion Bill Hardesty (San Diego, Calif.) and ISAF (International Sailing Federation) Sailing World Champion Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.) today were named US Sailing’s 2011 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year. A shortlist of eight male and seven female sailors – determined from nominations submitted by members of US Sailing – was evaluated by a panel of sailing journalists who selected these two sailors for the noteworthy distinction. The winners will be honored on February 22, 2012, during a luncheon at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, when they will be presented with specially-engraved Rolex timepieces. Established in 1961 by US Sailing and sponsored by Rolex Watch, U.S.A. since 1980, the annual presentation of US Sailing's Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards are considered the sport's ultimate recognition of an individual’s outstanding on-the-water achievements for the calendar year. (November 8, 2011) – The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) named US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics’ Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.) the recipient of the 2011 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year, the most prestigious recognition in the sport of sailing. At a gala ceremony during the International Sailing Federation’s Annual Conference in Puerto Rico, Tunnicliffe, a New York Yacht Club member, was presented with the distinct World Sailor trophy by HM King Constantine of Greece and a specially engraved Rolex timepiece by Colette Bennett, Rolex Watch USA. Bruce Kuryla Wins U. S. Offshore Championship
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (September 25, 2011) – The Lloyd Phoenix Trophy was decided in dramatic fashion on Sunday at the U.S. Offshore Championship, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy Squadron on Chesapeake Bay. Defending champion Bruce Kuryla (Milford, Conn.) of the New York Yacht Club and Milford Yacht Club and his team edged skipper Steve Travis (Mercer Island, Wash.) and his crew from the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle by a boat length in today’s final distance race to win the Championship. “To pull it out at the finish line is unbelievable,” said Kuryla. “We were behind Travis at the bottom mark, and after going back and forth with them, we trailed by a hundred yards at the top mark. We went low and fast in the light wind and kept creeping along in Long Island Sound style,” explained Kuryla. View More

The twelfth yearly edition of New York Yacht Club Masters Team Race for The Hinman Masters Invitational Trophy was held at New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court Clubhouse on August 19, 20 and 21 with teams representing 12 clubs. Competitors in this year's event include five-time champion New York Yacht Club; American Yacht Club of Rye, NY; Annapolis Yacht Club of Annapolis, MD; Boston Yacht Club of Marblehead, MA; Eastern Yacht Club of Marblehead, MA; Larchmont Yacht Club of Larchmont, NY; Noroton Yacht Club of Noroton CT, the 2010 winner; Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club of Oyster Bay, NY; Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans, LA; St. Francis Yacht Club of San Francisco, CA; Texas Corinthian Yacht Club of Kemah, TX and a combined team representing Storm Trysail Yacht Club/Ida Lewis Yacht Club, of Newport, RI. Unique to the format of the New York Yacht Club Masters Team Race for the Hinman Masters Invitational Trophy is that each boat must include a skipper at least 45 years of age and crew members must be at least 40 years of age. Rolex Fastnet RaceCarina, skippered by A. Rives Potts, NYYC Rear Commodore, Wins Class in Rolex Fastnet
A shut-down of the wind and a foul tide just short of the finish line made for a challenging few hours for the Royal Ocean Racing Club race team as an armada of Rolex Fastnet Race competitors descended on the finish line. Between 0000 and 0200 this morning 105 boats, or just over one third of the record-sized fleet, crossed the finish line. In most other classes, France dominated. One exception to the domination of this year’s race was American Rives Potts, rear commodore of the NYYC, whose 48 foot McCurdy & Rhodes-designed Carina won Class 2, ahead of two French boats – the JND35 Gaia and the J/122 Nutmeg IV. Despite his boat dating back to 1969 and originally having been the Nye family’s replacement for Carina 2, back-to-back winner of the Rolex Fastnet in 1955 and 1957, Potts is a boatyard owner in Connecticut and has been constantly tinkering and upgrading Carina since he acquired her in the early 1990s. Less obvious is that he is also a five-time America’s Cup sailor and winner, having competed on Freedom in 1980 and subsequent campaigns with Dennis Conner through 1995, and who completed the 1979 Fastnet Race aboard the winner, Ted Turner’s maxi Tenacious.
“It is fabulous,” said Potts of his win. “This is a 71-boat class with some very good boats in it and we feel very fortunate. Our navigator Dirk Johnson did a fabulous job. He was always looking for where there was the most pressure and the least current. The race was probably 90% going to weather and that is our strong point. Had it been more off the wind I’m sure the lighter, more modern boats would have left us in the dust. It was a good race for us.” With Rolex Fastnet Race and Bermuda Race wins behind her, Carina is now off to Australia to attempt to obtain the last piece of what Potts described as the “triple crown,” namely the Rolex Sydney Hobart. Annual Cruise Is Welcomed Home to Harbour Court
The 155th Annual Cruise of the New York Yacht Club began in New London, Conn., on Friday July 29. On Saturday, the Queen's Cup Races were held. The Queen's Cup was won by Vesper, skippered by Jim Swartz. From there, the Cruise went to Block Island, Menemsha Bight, Edgartown, Cuttyhunk and back to Newport for a Cruise Banquet. Swan 42 NationalsAll Over but the Shouting
NEWPORT, RI, July 17 -- As Sunday dawned a full 18 points separated Ken Colburn and Apparition from Phil Lotz and Arethusa at the Swan 42 US Nationals, sailed July 14-17 at the New York Yacht Club’s Harbour Court. Then spoke Arethusa. Phil Lotz’s Arethusa won the last two races today and clearly won the final day with a 6-1-1 finish. That left him tied after 11 races at 62 points with Ken Colburn and Apparition, the series leader. However, on the strength of Colburn’s five first-place finishes to Lotz’s two, Colburn was named the winner of the US Nationals. Four points behind Colburn and Lotz was Jon Halbert's Vitesse, fourth was Glenn Darden's and Phil Williamson's Hoss and fifth James Madden's Stark Raving Mad IV. A total of 19 yachts sailed.
