Market Access
The fourth
edition of the Fair Trade International Symposium (4th FTIS)
will host the Final Conference of the GeoFairTrade project, a three-year project
supported by the European Commission of which the WFTO is one of the partners. Learn
more on the project and partners here.
This is an open invitation to all interested
parties. Reduced tariff to the event will expire on 31 December 2011, and final
registration is on 29 February 2012. Learn more here.

Swazi Indigenous Products awarded 2012 Equator Prize |
Swazi Indigenous Products (SIP) is one of this year’s recipients of the Equator Prize. SIP was one of 25 winners out of 800 nominations from 113 countries around the world. The Equator prize is “awarded biennially to recognize and advance local sustainable development solutions for people, nature, and resilient communities.” The goal of the prize is to “shine a spotlight” internationally, to honor local and indigenous groups’ efforts towards sustainable development.

WFTO members to attend Fair Handeln |
WFTO members will be attending Fair Handeln, an annual international trade exhibition that focuses on Fair Trade and other responsible trading practices. Sixteen (16) members of the WFTO will showcase Fair Trade products at Messe Stuttgart, Germany, which will run from 12 to 15 April. Nine (9) producer groups of WFTO Africa (COFTA) will also attend the trade exhibition.

Producers training on intellectual property rights for design protection |
Most handicraft producers are creating original designs but have little awareness of the commercial importance of design protection from copycats. Realizing the value of design protection and appreciation, Indonesian Fair Trade Organization Apikri invited a speaker from the Islamic University Indonesia to conduct training on intellectual property rights with their producers.

Arab Fair Trade: The Lebanon experience |
Lebanon, a small country with only 10,452 square kilometers, is located east of the Mediterranean Sea, and is highly reputed for its rich history within the Arab region. It’s a “melting pot” of diverse religions and ethnic groups that has given Lebanon a great advantage in understanding the socio-economic situations of the region and adapting to them without defeat towards change. The Fair Trade movement in Lebanon is a result of a desire to make a difference. Home to thousands of small producers, our villages represent the agricultural strength and opportunity that one cannot not dismiss or abandon.

Women empowerment in Africa: The Tintsaba master weavers experience |
Tintsaba started as a women’s handicraft project in April, 1985 with 12 women. Over the years, Tintsaba has trained 895 remarkable women in both self development as well as economic skills, earning a reputation as Master Weavers in sisal for fine quality products. This has been achieved through a commitment to excellence in everything that we do, in our products, in our service, in our teamwork and in our commitment to the planet & the holistic well-being for Tintsaba’s women. Tintsaba has focused on quality products since it started through a unique grading system of all products. To achieve this, we focused on developing excellence in the Master Weaver program.

Micro-credit helps a woman realize dream |
Saraswati Khadky was among the first woman to start her own enterprise successfully with the financial assistance of Manushi. She realized her dream to become a self-sustainable entrepreneur! In 2004, despite being a broke housewife with two sons and two daughters to take care of, Saraswati dreamed of creating her own line of Nepali shoes and slippers. She has the skills and talent, and all she needed was a startup to realize her dream. She heard about a micro-credit program operated by Manushi.
