The research activity of the laboratory aims at the study of systems where a large number of interacting units give rise to cooperative phenomena, non-trivial patterns and complex dynamical behavior that cannot be simply inferred from the basic microscopic interactions. The laboratory is active in scientific areas ranging from social computational sciences to biological systems to interdisciplinary applications in information technology, economics and policy making. The division uses large-scale computational approaches, agent based models, complex networks, non-linear systems analysis and statistical physics methods to link the microscopic dynamics and interactions of the constituent elements to the statistical regularities and the macroscopic properties of the system under study.
