This year the students of Ecole Parsons à Paris entered behind the scenes of the Palais Garnier…

La Source – Opéra National de Paris – Palais Garnier – October 2011

This fall the students of Ecole Parsons à Paris entered behind the scenes of the Palais Garnier to experience the magic that goes into the production of a ballet: La Source. Twenty students from the Fashion Design and Design Management departments had the privilege to be guided through the Atelier de Costumes by the Directrice of the Atelier. The students visited the different departments within the Atelier: tailoring, knitting, headpieces, and dying. The students also had the chance to observe some of the final fittings of the costumes for La Source that were designed by Christian Lacroix.

After experiencing the Atelier de Costume, Nathalie Guilbaud, Opéra-Université Program Director gave them a tour of the inner workings of the Palais Garnier: from four floors below the stage to the stage managers office, and the dressing rooms. As well, they viewed the breathtaking Grand Staircase and the Foyers, which are decorated with spectacular mosaics and a magnificent ceiling painted by Paul Baudry, that portrays themes from the history of music.

A few days before the opening of La Source, students from the Foundation Year and Fashion Design department were invited back to the Opera Garnier for a dress rehearsal. That day Christian Lacroix was also in attendance. The students sat in the loges with a wonderful view overlooking the stage and drew the dancers in costume. The results of this work will be presented to the Opera on November 18th for potential inclusion in future Opera publications.

In addition to the privilege of discovering the Opera from the inside, the students from all of the school's departments had a chance to experience this magnificent ballet at an evening performance.
