Nonprofit Job Interviews: The Mission Question

Clearly one of the greatest differences between employment in the nonprofit and for-profit worlds is the concept of working towards a mission beyond the bottom line. Affinity for a mission, and serving a greater purpose, are part of the trade-off for lower salaries and lack of bonuses, etc., in the nonprofit sector. But job seekers – especially those new to the nonprofit sector – often forget the importance of this when interviewing for a nonprofit job.

spacer Ken Goldstein has been working in nonprofits and local government agencies since 1989. He has served the nonprofit community as a staff member, executive director, board member, volunteer, and, since 2003, as an independent consultant. As a consultant, he has served five nonprofits as Interim Executive Director, leading through transitions, mergers, and turn-arounds. He has also facilitated planning retreats, taught fundraising and management workshops, published a book on development planning, written several million dollars in funded grant proposals, and performed other contract consulting work for local nonprofit agencies. Ken holds a Master of Public Policy and Administration from CSU Sacramento and a BA in Politics from UC Santa Cruz.
