VA Supreme Court says ABC regs may apply to CT, Cav Daily
The Virginia Supreme Court says that whether the Collegiate Times and the Cavalier Daily fall under the definition of “college student publications” under ABC regulations prohibiting alcohol advertising depends on the intent of the newspapers in their distribution.
This sends the case, first filed in 2006, back to the Federal District Court in Richmond.

Bugle Yearbook makes ACP Best of Show list
The 2011 Bugle Yearbook, edited by Caroline Doss, placed fifth in the Associated Collegiate Press’s Best of Show competition at the National College Media Convention in Orlando, held October 26 – 30, 2011.

Collegiate Times places in national awards
Lindsey Brookbank, managing editor, took second place in the Associated Collegiate Press’s Reporter of the Year Award. Zach Crizer, editor in chief, won fourth place for Feature Story of the Year.
The Collegiate Times placed tenth in Best of Show list at the convention, which Brookbank and Crizer attended.

CT’s Brookbank finalist for ACP Reporter of the Year
Lindsey Brookbank has been named a finalist for the Associated Collegiate Press’s Reporter of the Year for her work at the Collegiate Times in 2010-11.
Brookbank is competing against two other reporters, Julie M. Zauzmer of the Harvard Crimson and Matt Stevens of the Daily Bruin at UCLA, for one of the highest individual awards a collegiate journalist can win.
The senior from Ashburn Va. is a double major in English with a concentration in professional writing and Communications with a concentration in electronic/print journalism. She has made Dean’s List for six consecutive semesters.
Brookbank, who is the managing editor of the Collegiate Times, began at the daily student newspaper as a features staff writer her sophomore year. She was promoted to features editor her junior year.
As features editor, she reported the deeply moving personal stories of two Virginia Tech families struggling with the bewildering losses of their promising young students. The story of Morgan Harrington’s murder in October 2009 was well known when Brookbank revisited her parents’ continued search for answers in April 2011. Kevin Lawall’s story was not well known when Brookbank told the harrowing tale of the freshman’s suicide in October 2010 through the eyes of his sister, Jennifer, then a senior biological sciences major, and their mother, Debbie.
“Lindsey clearly has a deep respect and compassion for her subjects. She masterfully painted pictures of life and death, of loss and giving back, that had the ability to make meaning out of chaos,” said Kelly Wolff, general manager of Educational Media Company at Virginia Tech. “Her work has been a true contribution to the shared story of the Tech community.”
When Brookbank graduates in May 2012, she expects to pursue a career in journalism. Her body of work for the Collegiate Times is available online.
The ACP awards will be announced October 29, 2011 at the National College Media Convention in Orlando.

The Collegiate Times has been named as a finalist in two prestigious Associated Collegiate Press awards.

Zach Crizer’s spring 2011 story, Ex-felon moves forward, is a finalist for ACP’s Story of the Year.

Crizer is the 2011-12 editor in chief of the Collegiate Times. He is a senior majoring in Communication who is from Midlothian Va. He recently completed an internship at the New York Post.

CT’s Caleb Fleming wins national journalism competition
Collegiate Times writer Caleb Fleming, of Warrenton, Va., a junior majoring in economics in the College of Science, is one of nine winners of the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition and a journalism study trip to Japan.
