ROLEPLAY 101: A QUICK GUIDE TO ROLEPLAYING ON IWAKU

Getting involved in a roleplay on Iwaku is super easy. But just in case you find yourself confused, we've provided a step by step guide along with some helpful resources to get you started.

Are you a NEWBIE ROLEPLAYER? Skip down to "Roleplaying for Newbies"!

STEP 01: FILLING OUT YOUR ROLEPLAY INTERESTS
Fill out your Roleplay Resume. This tells everyone what sort of roleplays you are most interested in and if you're available for invites.

STEP 02: FINDING A ROLEPLAY TO JOIN
Are you looking for a roleplay with NO BIOS REQUIRED?
Go to JUMP IN ROLEPLAYS. These roleplays do no require you to sign up before you play. You just "Jump In"! Some Jump Ins have an Out of Character thread for OOC comments located in ROLEPLAY SIGNUPS & OOCS.

Are you looking for a GROUP ROLEPLAY with SIGN UPs?
Go to ROLEPLAY SIGNUPS & OOC and find what interests you. You can sort through the Sign-up threads by Genre using the display tools at the bottom of the thread list. Read what requirements the Game Masters have for joining their roleplay - then join! You'll find their In Character thread in the appropriate Genre Forum.

Are you looking for a TWO PLAYER or ONE ON ONE roleplay?
Go to ONE[x]ONE REQUESTS. You can browse other people's requests and see how to contact them.

STEP 03: STARTING YOUR OWN ROLEPLAY
Do you want to check for interest or discuss ideas before starting your roleplay?
Post a topic in Roleplay Talk. Here you can see who might be interested in joining your roleplay, or discuss and brainstorm ideas for potential plots.

Do you want to start a roleplay without any Sign-Up sheets or character bios?
Start your thread in JUMP IN ROLEPLAYS. Make sure to give a brief description of your setting so players will know what your roleplay is about. If you want a place for people to talk Out of Character you can post a thread in ROLEPLAY SIGNUPS & OOCs. Put a link to it in the first post of your Jump In!

Do you want to start a roleplay that requires character bios and signups?
Start a thread in ROLEPLAY SIGNUPS & OOCS. Put all information in there you want players to know. When you are ready to start your In Character thread, pick the Genre Forum that suits your roleplay best. Hint: Fantasy = The "Past" for any roleplays with fantasy elements or set at a point in history. Modern = The "Present" and includes all roleplays in the modern world realistic or supernatural. Sci-Fi = The "Future" and is ideal for any roleplays with high-technology or futuristic settings.

Do you want to post requests for private two player roleplays?
Create a thread in the ONE[x]ONE REQUESTS with your ideas and requirements in roleplay partners. When you are ready to post your In Character thread, post it in the ONE ON ONE ROLEPLAYS section.

    STEP 04: ADVERTISING YOUR ROLEPLAY
Players do not always come immediately. We have multiple methods of advertising your roleplays.
    • Ad Rotation: You can submit your roleplay to randomly appear in the ad rotation through this link.
    • Roleplay Talk: You can post ads in Roleplay Talk when you are seeking players. Just use the [RPAD] prefix!
    • Messaging Members: You can invite members directly by leaving them a Visitor Message or a Private Message. Check their Roleplay Resume first to see if they might be interested in your roleplay.
    • CBox Mentions: You're welcome to ask members in the cbox if they'd look at your roleplay.

Remember: Don't SPAM your advertisements to the same people over and over again. This is especially important in the Cbox and when Messaging members.

STEP 05: RESPECT YOUR FELLOW PLAYERS
Above all, be respectful to other roleplayers. Whether they are new or old, not so good at writing or the best writer ever. Always be polite when interacting with other players. Respect a Game Master's rules or a player's requests. Remember that EVERY roleplayer was new and terrible at some point. Use tact when reviewing signups or contacting a player about a problem.

    ROLEPLAY GUIDE FOR NEWBIE ROLEPLAYERS
If you are NEW to Roleplaying or simply want to learn some roleplay etiquette this is a brief guide with helpful links to get you started. These rules are pretty universal to all roleplaying mediums, so use them well!

STEP 01: LEARN WHAT ROLEPLAY IS AND THE DIFFERENT STYLES
Roleplay is playing pretend. On this site we use writing & story telling as a medium for playing pretend. To learn more about roleplay and it's different styles, you can review the "What is Roleplay & Roleplay Styles" guide.

STEP 02: USE YOUR BEST SPELLING AND GRAMMAR
Because we roleplay using writing and our site is a Multilingual community, it's really important that you write sentences that other players can understand. Always type out complete sentences. User punctuation and capital letters. Spellcheck your posts. This ensures that other players will be able to understand what you're writing!

STEP 03: AVOID "ONE SENTENCE" POSTS
In forum roleplay, you have an opportunity to add extra details and description to your roleplaying to make it interesting. Use it! One Liners are very boring and do not give your roleplay partners much to work with. For tips on how to add details to your posts, view our "Writing a Roleplay Post" guide.

STEP 04: READ BEFORE YOU POST
Read the Forum descriptions to make sure you are posting in the right forum. Read the Signup Sheets if there is information about a roleplay or rules you need to know. And ALWAYS read the posts in a roleplay before you post your own post. Reading information and posts makes sure that you don't miss any important details. This is especially true when you are replying to other player's posts.

STEP 05: RECOGNIZE WHEN AN ACTION AFFECTS YOUR CHARACTER
When you read roleplay posts prior to yours, learn to recognize when actions affect your characters and when they don't. It's good to know which characters are in proximity to yours and close enough to interact or affect your character. This will avoid common mistakes of responding to characters that are not talking to yours, or reacting to an event that is no where near your character.

STEP 06: NEVER HIJACK A PLAYER'S CHARACTER OR PLOT
Hijacking is when you write out and post actions, dialogue, or history for someone else's character. That means you are playing/creating their character for them and taking away their chance to play it themselves. So don't do this! You can learn more about Hijacking in "The Art of Hijacking".
