ACD/ChemSketch 5.0 Operates under Linux using CodeWeavers' CrossOver Office

Toronto, Canada, August 23, 2004 -

Advanced Chemistry Development, Inc., (ACD/Labs) is pleased to announce that their freeware chemical drawing software, ACD/ChemSketch 5.0, can now be run under the Linux® operating system using CodeWeavers' CrossOver Office. This compatibility will enable students and educators who are Linux enthusiasts to join the 350,000 individuals worldwide who presently meet their structure drawing needs using ACD/ChemSketch freeware.

The growing popularity of the Linux operating system has led to numerous requests for a Linux-compatible version of ACD/ChemSketch. While there is currently no version of ACD/ChemSketch available that can run natively under Linux, the 5.0 freeware version has been successfully tested in CrossOver Office by CodeWeavers' advocates, and was shown to install and run analogous to how it would perform in the Windows® environment.

Antony Williams, Ph.D., V.P. Scientific Development and Marketing at ACD/Labs, comments, "The world of scientific software users is occupied by diverse computer platform advocates. We have received numerous requests to provide our software solutions on multiple platforms including Macintosh and Linux over the past few years. While we have supplied a number of our prediction algorithms on UNIX-based platforms, and these will be available shortly on Linux, the demands of releasing a GUI on multiple platforms adds significant overhead. Fortunately enough, PC emulation systems have been developed for Macintosh, and the recent efforts by CodeWeavers for Linux enable our multi-platform support. We look forward to hearing that there is a new group of ACD/ChemSketch users celebrating our capabilities on Linux."

ACD/ChemSketch enables users to quickly and easily draw molecules, reactions, and schematic diagrams, calculate physical properties, generate accurate IUPAC names for chemical structures, and design professional reports and presentations. ACD/ChemSketch is the portal to ACD/Labs' entire range of chemical and spectroscopic prediction, processing, and databasing software packages. The freeware version of ACD/ChemSketch is available for download at www.acdlabs.com/download/chemsk.html.

CrossOver Office is a Linux desktop productivity tool that allows users to run common MS Windows productivity applications and web browser plug-ins under the Linux operating system without requiring a Microsoft Windows OS license. A fully functional 30-day trial of CrossOver Office can be obtained from www.codeweavers.com/site/products. CrossOver Office is a commercial implementation of the Wine Project (www.winehq.org).
