The Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC), based at the University of Oregon, was established in 1992 to provide technical assistance to organizations setting up computer networks in developing areas for collaborative research, education and international partnerships. Over the past twenty years, the NSRC has worked with universities, research institutes, Internet Service Providers, non-governmental organizations, governmental and supranational agencies, and industry to help develop networks and cyberinfrastructure resources in Africa, Asia/Pacific, Latin America/Caribbean, and the Middle East. The NSRC is partially funded by grant number 0963081 from the International Research Network Connections (IRNC) program of the National Science Foundation and Google, with additional contributions from dozens of public and private organizations. The NSRC works closely with several University of Oregon organizations, including the Route Views project, the Network and Telecommunication Services group, UO Libraries, and the Wired Humanities Project (WHP).

 Historical Police Archives of Guatemala

The NSRC has assisted with equipment, travel and coordination to help University of Oregon (UO) Faculty and Staff work with the Archivo Histórico de la Policía Nacional de Guatemala, including the production of a documentary film by UO Associate Professor of Journalism and Communication Gabriela Martínez. Professor Martínez has produced a trailer for the documentary.

From April 16-20 the Tanzania Education and Research Network (TERNET) and the Network Startup Resource Center are teaching two concurrent five-day workshops with a group of engineers from universities throughout Tanzania. The first track's program includes campus network design principles, Layer 2/ Layer 3 network design and operation, and campus network security. The second track will focus on Unix/ Linux systems administration and IP services. Both tracks will be hands-on and lab-based and are intended to help continue developing robust, high-performance campus and national research and education (NREN) networks. The workshops will take place a the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT).

 AfNOG 2012 Meeting and Conference

The 13th African Network Operators' Group Meeting and Conference will take place from May 6-18, 2012 in Serekunda, The Gambia. In addition several other concurrent events will take place such as the the AfriNIC 16 Meeting. The NSRC will be teaching workshops on Network Monitoring and Management in French and English as well as supporting, assisting, coordinating and helping to plan the events to take place.

Recent Activities

VINAREN-AIT-NASATI Campus Network Design Workshop

The NSRC worked with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), The Vietnam Research and Education Network (VINAREN) and the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Information (NASATI) to teach a five-day Campus Network Design Workshop from December 5-9, 2011 at the VINAREN Centre in Hanoi, Vietnam. The workshop emphasized the importance of the campus network as the foundation in developing robust, high performance National and Regional Research and Education Networks. Thirty seven students from 10 countries attended the training.

GARNET-AfNOG-NSRC Network Monitoring and Management

The NSRC taught a 6-day workshop at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science Technology (KNUST) campus in Kumasi, Ghana as part of training to assist with the development of the Ghanaian Academic Research and Education Network (GARNET). Fifteen GARNET member institutions as well as GARNET staff attended the training which included a full-dayon IP Address Planning, 4 days of Network Monitoring and Management and a day of BGP routing. The workshop was partially organized and coordinated by the African Network Operators Group (AfNOG) Secretariat located in Accra, Ghana.
