Subtitle renderer matters |
Note: this article has nothing to do with video, releases or whatever else you usually care about, I’m going to talk about typesetting. If you don’t know what it is or don’t care – stop reading right now.
As you might know, there’s the haruhichan guide to 10bit, which is apparently one of the most popular playback guides lately. It’s more or less right but there’s one problem – the author (nand) suggests you to use internal MPC-HC renderer (ISR for short) to get the most awesome 10bit playback.
After getting a couple of complains about our bakemonogatari typesetting and reading some derping about broken TS on different forums, I decided to at least explain things to nand since he seemed adequate and might want to update his guide. I joined CGi channel and showed him two test samples on which ISR used to fail.
“If you’re analpained about test cases, aspect ratios or watch anime with shitty typesetting, use a different subtitle renderer like xy-VSFilter. Be warned though, the subtitles will be very blurry as a result. I recommend waiting until it supports madVR’s overlay hooks like MPC-HC does. Alternatively, don’t use subtitles (thanks tp7 for the suggestion)”
…What? I was a bit surpised with this stupid update and figured I’ll explain things to you myself.

So I heard you want your ideal release. |
Hi. If you didn’t notice, the last 2 days Sutai (our bro from FFFpeeps, GotWoot and 9001 other groups) was hurfing a durf on #ANE channel about how bad our Bakemonogatari release is, begging me to fix it. You know that we do care (*cough*) about our stuff so I actually consider making some patches and releasing v2.
Here’s the list of changes I applied so far and all known derps in our release. If you know something that isn’t listed – comment. This post will be here for 2-3 days for this sole purpose.
EDIT: comments are now closed. I’ll probably apply all necessary changes within this month and we’ll release v2. You still can find me on IRC if you know something :important: that isn’t mentioned here.
EDIT2: I decided to play with it a little more, and now I’m working on it every time I feel like typesetting. I wouldn’t expect it to be out any time :really soon:, so feel free to bug me on IRC if you want something to be fixed. Typesetting is out of questions since I’m re-checking it all anyway. Song’s romanization should be fine too – we re-did it completely (thanks to Kien).

Random update. Winter 2012. |
Why is this pic here? Because Miyako >>> your waifu.
All right, since some of you might be wondering (I hope so) about whether we’re alive or not, I’ll wrap some things again.
- We’re alive, just don’t have so much time to spend on animu anymore.
- PPD in progress and will be released when it’s done. It isn’t dropped but typesetting actually takes time.
- We’re doing Denpaonna with GotWoot subs and it will be released when the last BD is out + a month or so.
- I’m also doing The Second Best SHAFT Show and The Second Best Eroge-Based Anime Ever and it will be released pretty soon.
Probably. - I will also do The Best SHAFT Show and The Best Eroge-Based Anime Ever when The Second Best is released.
- We found a timer for these SHAFT shows so we don’t need one anymore, thanks.
- We still want a timer for some %random_shows% which no one wants to time (possibly Shana, Taishou Yakyuu Musume and some other project yet to be discovered).
- I haven’t touched Iroha or S;G yet, but will do soon, probably.
- We might or might not do Usagi Drop. If anything isn’t released in a month – it won’t be released at all.
- Most likely I won’t do Penguindrum since I kinda don’t like it lately.
- That wall of torrents on Nyaa was Daiz’s doing. I don’t have access to “Afternoon Naps Empire” account nor do I care.
This is probably all. Do ask if you want to know something, just don’t expect too much of releasing activity here.
EDIT: we’ll most likely release both Great SHAFT Shows together later.

SHAFTed! |
You can’t apply to join ANE… usually.
However, SHAFT dictates its own rules.
One SHAFT show takes too fucking much effort for a single man to handle.
We are encoders, some of us like to typeset, but none of us likes to time and shift shit.
So the QUESTION is… ( ゚◡◡゚)
DO YOU HAVE THE GUTS to shift SHAFT subs?!
You gotta be on good terms with Aegisub:
- know what things like scenebleed and subtitle flickering mean;
- know how to use tpp;
- be prepaired to fix some stuff by hands (i.e. “select all -> shift -> apply tpp” won’t work).
You don’t have to be GODLIKE of course – we do help each other (we’ve got tophf for that purpose, who’s like, :clever:), just make sure that you actually love your work and don’t make us teach you basics. You don’t have to be fast, work in a timely manner or time any typesetting either. Something like “1-2 days for a few hundred lines of text” would be OK.
Bug someone with aop (&) status on our IRC channel if you’re interested.

I just put it here so you’d know what we’re going to do with you. Prepare yourself.
