spacer NAB 2012 Notes and Musings from Day One
By: walter biscardi on Apr 17, 2012 at 1:04:24 am

Some quick notes from a very VERY long day, need to get some rest so I can repeat this all again tomorrow. Some of this is third hand as I spent the day working with the fine folks from the Small Tree Communications booth so I have not had a chance to walk the show floor and see many products personally yet .... Opening Bell Winner In South Hall it appears that BlackMagic Design kicked off the day in high frenzy thanks to the announcement of their Digital Cinema Camera, a 2.5k camera that retails for $2995 and includes Davinci...

spacer FCP X and it's launch: Blunder or Genius?
By: Bret Williams on Apr 16, 2012 at 10:28:35 pm

In light of all the NAB announcements regarding editing, I have to ask - "WHY is it going to take time for FCPX to mature?" Apple is the biggest richest company in the world. I have to figure they've been at this piece of software for 2-3 years. They had 10 years of making FCP 1-7, Motion, etc. They own the code base for shake. They have logic. They can hire anyone they need. Why is it in the same 2 years Avid and Premiere can reinvent themselves? Adobe seems to be able crank out a limitless amount of software...

spacer "Smoke is Changing" is NOT a Marketing Slogan
By: walter biscardi on Apr 12, 2012 at 2:34:05 pm

Just got a sneak peek at the new Autodesk Smoke. WOW is all I'm allowed to say so let me say it again. WOW! Avid and Adobe might have gotten the party started but the discussion about Post Production will really begin on Sunday. For once, the actual product is going to live up to the hype. Smoke IS changing and this is one company that really REALLY listened. I www.smokeischanging.com to sign up for the event. If you won't be there on Sunday and are coming to NAB, put the Autodesk booth to the top of your list. One...

spacer Whoa Nellie - CS6 announced - SPEEDGRADE added to suite but there is more ( did I mention the Canon C500?)
By: gary adcock on Apr 12, 2012 at 8:24:49 am

Well Gee. So yesterday added even more surprises. Adobe announces CS6 Suite with huge updates to Premier Pro and AE, adds New Apps in Prelude and Speedgrade bit.ly/HDejo0 I have to say after test driving the suite, I too am very impressed with what Adobe is doing. But the kicker to me is not the advanced integration or the ease of use or the ability to modify the user interface in PPro. But in Speedgrade, When the purchace of Iridas was announced last September, this was what I had hoped for, and what I got is even better. See Irirdas'...

By: Frederic Baumann on Apr 11, 2012 at 2:17:37 pm

I frequently have to record webinars and software demos, and was looking for a tool to record what happens on my screen. Finding no affordable solution, and no appropriate freeware, (and also for fun), I decided to develop my own screencasting tool which is now available in a beta status. Demo here: www.fbmn-software.com/en/screen-recorder.html If you are interested to be a beta tester, please feel free to register at m.fbmn-software.com/webApp/EVAL?product=SCC. You will then receive the beta version, so that you can test it and make any relevant feedback. To thank them for their help, I will offer to the 20 first...

spacer NAB 2012, Apple Releases FCPX 10.0.4, Avid Motion Graphics, Autodesk Updates Smoke
By: gary adcock on Apr 11, 2012 at 7:05:44 am

This close to the show and things are still happening. Apple released the 10.0.4 update for FCPX yesterday and I believe Matrox, BMD and Aja have all now released updated drivers also, Please make sure to update both the software and the hardware drivers at the same time, word is that there are a number of fixes that resolve many of the hardware related issues. Avid has really been hyping Avid Motion Graphics and it will be a big part of the Avid Booth this NAB youtu.be/HBGCnqQ66bU, Autodesk has also been pounding the street about the "big" changes that are...

spacer NAB Show Starts in one Week.
By: gary adcock on Apr 9, 2012 at 7:48:44 am

So Have you made your Plans to attend? I firmly believe that this will be one of those NAB's where there are so many announcements that it will be hard to keep up, especially since we have already seen a huge number of preshow announcements like those from Nikon's D800, Canon's C-300 and new highspeed and large sensor cameras from both Sony FS700 and Vision Research's Miro M320s. Lighting will also be going through some big changes too, LED tools are farther ahead of anything else in lighting right now and I expect to see at least one new LED...

spacer Using the iMac to replace "Big Iron" desktop workstations. A consideration
By: walter biscardi on Apr 9, 2012 at 5:55:52 am

If you’ve been following along the past few months, you know we’re testing a very nice Dell Workstation as we plan the immediate future of our company and what computers might replace all the Mac Pros we currently run. Since we’re an Adobe / Avid centric shop now, the Dell shows us how we might work in a cross platform world. But as I have been using an almost 2 year old 27″ iMac in both my Adobe and Avid testing for the past 6 months, the thought dawned on me, why not consider replacing some of the Mac Pros...

Adobe has released "sneak peak video" at the CS6 announcement that is obviously eminent on.fb.me/I29HF1 I am supprised that you have to log into facebook to see them, but information is where you find it now adays. spacer Premiere Pro - increase/decrease video and audio tracks using the keyboard
By: Michael Hancock on Apr 4, 2012 at 4:13:29 pm

In Avid, I’d often save timeline views with audio tracks massively expanded for rough audio mixing, or the audio small and the video larger for cutting and applying effects. If I wanted to adjust the track size even more I could just hit Ctrl+L to enlarge any activated tracks, and Ctrl+K to make them smaller (PC – I imagine the Mac is Cmd+L and Cmd+K). You can do it with a mouse, too, but I prefer to do as much as possible with the keyboard. I find it faster, gives me more finite control, and saves my wrist in the...

spacer Premiere Pro - open clips from the Project Panel in the Source Monitor using keyboard shortcuts
By: Michael Hancock on Apr 3, 2012 at 9:18:44 pm

Figured this one out the other day - selecting a file in the Project Panel and opening it in the Source Monitor, using only the keyboard. Pretty basic, right? Well, not with the default layout in Premiere. First, let's see what happens without mapping the keyboard. Open a Premiere project and activate the Project Panel (Shift+1 is the default shortcut). Use the Up/Down arrows to cycle the clips - select one and hit Return. You'd expect it to load into the Source Monitor, right? Nope. It activates the name so you can rename the clip. Hit Return again. It shifts...

By: Glen Montgomery on Apr 2, 2012 at 9:37:48 am

I feel like I was the last person on earth to see this movie. Positive reviews were flowing all over twitter while it was in theaters and I could never seem to drag myself to the theaters, even though it seemed right up my alley. Crime drama, slow burn story, awesome actors, intense violence, fast cars, 80′s vibe. Whatever the case, I didn’t get to see this until it finally came out on blu ray, and it completely decimated me. The artistry of it is kind of hard to believe in this day and age, where the people with money...

That's right, The show floor opens 2 weeks from today. spacer PROAIM Shoulder Rig Kit-201 – Review
By: Chris Blair on Apr 1, 2012 at 6:21:57 pm

We recently added a Panasonic AF-100 camera along with several lenses to our shooting gear and after testing our CPM Film Tools rig with it,  it became obvious we were going to need a heavier-duty rig to make the setup functional. After hours spent researching various options, I decided to take a chance on the Proaim Shoulder Rig Kit-201 from www.cinecity.com. Here s a direct link to what we bought. Considering that we only shoot about once or twice a week on average, I couldn t see spending several thousand dollars for similarly configured kits from Redrock Micro, Cinevate, Zacuto...
