About Our Holdings

Every company in our fund was chosen because of the user experience they provide. Here is specifically what we looked for:

  • 1. A demonstrated care in the design of their products and Web site
  • 2. A history of innovation
  • 3. They inspire loyalty in their customer base
  • 4. Doing business with them is a positive experience

Apple (AAPL)

Come on, do we really need to write anything?

Electronic Arts (ERTS)

spacer

EA's obsessive pursuit of reality is really impressive. They continually improve their games year over year. In a business where a hit game one year does not guarantee future success they have managed to create franchises like Madden which has a rabid fan base. Their Web sites are great and overall they rarely disappoint.

Google (GOOG)

Google has become synonymous with great user experience. Gmail, Google Maps and Google Earth are amazing products. This list just couldn't exist without them.

Jet Blue Airways (JBLU)

spacer

Jet Blue has redefined the experience of air travel. Offering first class service at discount prices. Their check in kiosks are gorgeous and friendly compared to the other airlines.

Netflix (NFLX)

spacer

We had a lot of debate over NetFlix whether they continued to innovate like they did when they first started. Their user experience is amazing but they have been a little stagnant. We changed our minds when they announced a $1 million prize to anyone who could create a better recommendation engine. Kind of like the X Prize for what movie I should watch. Great work!

Nike (NKE)

spacer

Nike is on the list for their innovative use of the digital channel and the care they take in designing their products. I don't think any brand has done such a good job transferring their brand online. NikeID, Nike Labs and the new Nike/Apple product all make Nike a leader in user experience. Also, the Nike stores are great experiences.

Progressive Insurance (PGR)

spacer

Progressive lives up to its name. On their site they show you what other company's rates are when you request a quote. They show you the quotes other people are getting. They were one of the first companies to equip inspectors with printers and wireless computers to issue you a cheque on the spot. Progressive constantly innovates their way ahead in the industry.

Research In Motion (RIMM)

spacer

Blackberry has become synonymous with push email. While we love Palm we had to go with RIM in the fund. With their lawsuits settled they are releasing new hardware and software that looks as good as it works. The new Pearl is a beautiful phone and the UI is so simple even stock brokers can use it.

Target (TGT)

spacer

This retailer not ony has a great e-commerce site but their commitment to offering high design at affordable prices has made the Wal-Mart try to emulate them.

Yahoo (YHOO)

spacer

This was a tough decision. Overall, Yahoo is so large we find it an uneven user experience. But we decided to add them because they do a lot of things that indicate they truly value user experience. Some exaples include their UI Library, Design Pattern Library and their YUIblog. Their acquisitions of Flickr, Upcoming.org and De.lico.us shows a business commitment to companies that deliver great UX.

What is the UX Fund?

The UX Fund is an investment experiment inspired by Jeneanne Rae and the Design Council. We believe that companies that deliver a great user experience will see it reflected in their stock price.

The fund is comprised of 10 companies that we feel do great user experience. We invested $50,000 USD (about $5,000 in each company) on November 1, 2006. Shares must be held for 1 year.
