The Logo Reveal

Several people have noted that I avoided having a logo or any traditional sort of branding at the top of my pages. I originally didn't see the need for a logo or branding until now. I've created a logo that I think is classic and expressive at the same time.

When I set out to create this design, one of the aspects I was really interested in was forgoing the use of a logo and traditional branding. This was partially motivated by the fact that I’m terrible at logo design, but it was also sincerely motivated by my desire for the content and ideas to be “the brand”.

We’re all familiar with the misconception that a mark or identity is the brand. And we’ve all seen companies think that by updating their mark they will change how they are perceived, when in fact, this couldn’t be further from the truth. A mark comes to be associated with the actions and behavior of a business or individual. As a result, I felt that the real brand could be represented by my content, and a mark was unecessary.

I finally broke down and decided that I could definitely use a mark to associate with my identity and work. It’s a series of curly brackets surround a lowercase “G”. I feel that it accurately represents the kind of work I do as it takes elements of code and merges them with aspects of design and typography. It clearly represents my interests and should make for a good representation of my site.
