Latest Birdingpal tour - Birdwatching in Mexico
Read Renes great description of his birding trips in Northern Mexico, he has some really mouth watering birds on his trips. He leads trips to the north-east and north-west of Mexico and specializes in one day trips for cruise ship passengers. Heres what he says..
FROM THE EAST TO THE WEST:
As I currently live in Monterrey (northeast MX), but I also do several trips to Mazatlan (Northwest MX) during the year, I lead trips in both sides of the country.
In the Monterrey area we have some interesting species such as Blue-crowned Motmot, Blue Bunting, the northeastern endemic Crimsom-collared Grosbeak, Rufous-capped Warbler. We will listen to the calls of the Thicket Tinamou, among several tropical species. If you are in Monterrey for late July, or late March, we can go to find
the very rare Golden-cheeked Warbler in some mountainous terrain near the city.
"Golden-browed Warble" R Valdes
Only 1.5 hrs from Monterrey are the pine-oak forest of the Sierra Madre Oriental, where we can find the endemic and endangered Maroon-fronted Parrot (May-Oct only), and at the same area other possible species are the Colima Warbler, Crescent-chested Warbler, Elegant Euphonia, Pine Flycatcher, Elegant Trogon, and Hooded Yellowthroat.
About two hours from Monterrey is one of the only known places where the Worthens Sparrow can be found all-year round. Other species are typical for prairie habitats but this varies depending on the time of year. In winter we have the most species diversity, with the sparrows being the most common; others species are Mountain Plover, Ferruginous Hawk, Golden Eagle, American & Spragues Pipit, to name a few.
