Highlights
Malaysia comprises of two quite remotely separated sections, with most visitors attracted to the islands and sites of Peninsula Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur is a modern and manageable capital to fly into, with several notable sights. Just two hours away is the historically intriguing 15th Century town of Melaka, while further up the coast is a similar experience at George Town on Penang Island. Langkawi island, with its lovely beach scenery and duty free shopping rounds up the Andaman coastal attractions. On the opposite coast are several smaller, more exclusive, no less exotic islands including Redang, the Perhentians and Tioman island.
The hinterland offers an excellent experience if you’re seeking tropical nature and highland landscape, with the cooler climes of the Cameron Highlands a popular choice, or the wildlife of Taman Negara National Park. But for true wilderness and adventure you should head east to Borneo, and go trekking on Mount Kinabalu or Gunung Mulu or the Sabah rainforests. Then of course there’s the world class diving at Semporna.
