Working with Hooper

Background:

William Hooper has 30 plus years of diverse experience in the fields of Education and Mental Health. He has taught Psychology and Life Adjustment at the University level and has created a course known as ELMS - Effective Life Management Skills. He developed an award winning Professional Readiness and Career Development program for an internationally known Institute. He is a trained Mediator and Therapist. As a young professional, Hooper held the position of Center Psychologist at a Special Education Center for Severely Emotionally Disturbed students and their families. He is Board Certified in Clinical Hypnotherapy and has developed Mind/Body programs for professional and recreational athletes. Hooper has directed the Holmon Resource Group, a training and consultation organization dedicated to realization of Human potential, since 1986.

Hooper identifies himself as 'eclectic' in outlook and cites the works of Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, Richard Alpert, Leo Buscaglia, and Robert Puryear as favorites among those who influence him.

He has a published volume of psycho-spiritually influenced poetry entitled Walk with Me.

Philosophy & Methodology:

Dr. Hooper begins his work with individuals, groups, businesses, and families with what he calls the operational truth exercise. He believes that we all have truths about ourselves and others, as well as most things that are part of our lives and... that these truths guide our choices and behaviors. Hence, these are our operational truths. For example; if you like vanilla ice cream, we would assume that you are operating with the truth – Ice cream is good – and so you choose to eat vanilla ice cream.

If you are where you want to be in life, then you can conclude that your operational truths are working for you. They are leading you to what you want and where you want to be. Sometimes our truths are easy to identify and sometimes they are hidden from us – outside of our conscious awareness. Dr. Hooper works to help his clients to identify the truths they are operating with. Truths that are working for us are reinforced. Should a truth that is not serving us well be identified, then an alternative operational truth that will lead us to what we want and where we want to be in our life is explored.

For Dr. Hooper, the ultimate questions in determining the need for change in your life include 'Are you where you want to be mentally, physically, and spiritually?' 'Are you where you want to be in your various social roles or 'many selves'? The 'many selves' include the various roles within a family such as husband, wife, parent, child, brother, sister and your student self, friend self, citizen self,...it goes on and on - because as Human Beings, Dr. Hooper believes we are all like diamonds. We have many sides or faucets and that is what gives us each the potential of brilliance. He teaches that balance between our 'many selves' is essential in realizing our greatest potential as individuals.

Our truths come from the process of socialization that Dr. Hooper calls 'somebody training'. Starting with the influence of our source relationships we begin to develop truths about ourselves and the world we live in - for better or worse. These early truths are powerful and ultimately, may help us in realizing our potentials as a Human Being or may actually be working against us- without us being aware of it.

As Dr. Hooper likes to say, 'we are all works in progress'; however, some have the advantages of an empowering 'somebody training' with strong source relationships that provide them with more to work with and others are less fortunate. Their 'somebody training' may have led to the development of ineffective operational truths. They may be the product of disempowerment and discouragement. They suffer from a fundamental lack of confidence and life skills set to use in achieving success in life. They nay operate with a truth that the best way to avoid failure is simply –don't try. They operate with fear of failure rather than recognizing failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. They may be trapped in the human tendency to disregard or underestimate the power of the unconscious truths we bring with us into our adult lives.

Understanding 'where' our operational truths come from can offer insight and understanding. It is the question often pursued in long term Psychotherapy. While it may be interesting and even helpful; ultimately, it is not necessary to know where an operational truth came from to change it to a more effective truth. Dr. Hooper believes that as we identify behaviors we want to develop or change, it is important to appreciate that behind any behavior - there is a truth. So, as you change a truth, you change a behavior.
