Mothership HackerMoms: Projects. Friends. Inspiration. With Childcare.
We are the first women’s hackerspace [link], located in Oakland, CA. It’s dedicated to giving mothers the time and space to explore DIY craft and design, hacker/maker culture, entrepreneurship, and all manner of creative expression. Because our kids learn by watching us, we provide on-site childcare every time we meet.

Redux! Knitting for All Levels
Tuesday April 10, 2012, 10am-12pm
(Free for members. $10 for non-members.)
(Mom co-op childcare only, no cost)
More knitting by Madame Marty. She is a master knitter who can knit like lightning with a cigarette in one hand and a chablis in the other. She’ll teach you even if you’re all thumbs, a hopeless beginner or a master knitter in need of some company.
Redux! Hoop Workshop, part1: Making the Killer Hula Hoop for Kids or Adults
Thursday April 12, 2012, 6-8pm
(Make your own for cheap, or make one for us and we’ll foot the cost. Details below)
(Childcare is provided for $10 per child, with an RSVP)
These blingy, hardcore, heavy duty sport hula hoops were so great that we want more. Take home yours for just $13 in materials (and $25 workshop cost for non-members, free for members, or contact us with special circumstances). Or lend us your hands to make some for HackerMoms fundraising, and we’ll pick up the cost. Fire hooper Cinder teaches us to make kids and adults hoops from pvc pipe that’s we adorn with gaffer and metallic tape. They’re fun to make! Part 2 will be a hooping class where you’ll learn 10 moves for a choreographed set that we could perform at our Grand Opening Event!
Hoops, part2: Hoop Choreography Lesson
Sunday April 15, 2012, 2-5pm at walkable 63rd Street Mini-Park (great for kids!)
(Free for members. $20 for non-members.)
(Childcare is provided for $5/hour/child with RSVP)
Put those killer hula hoops to the test. Cinder will (re)teach us how to hoop again with 10 smooth moves in a choreographed set with music (that we could potentially perform at our Grand Opening Event!). We’ll end up breathless, laughing, and hopefully with waists again. Our kids can play and watch us hoop-dance. Meet at the park, which is less than a 5 min walk from the hackerspace. We’ll have a picnic, too, so feel free to bring some lunch, food or drink. Don’t forget your hoops…and sand toys!

Our adolescent daughters have many growing pains. We want to see them thrive. Based on the book, The Mother-Daughter Project: How Mothers and Daughters Can Band Together, Beat The Odds, and Thrive Through Adolescence, this group explores how to nurture our daughters and support them as they become young women. Our goal is for each of us to shine in her own identity, not in any proscribed or limited one. We want our daughters to appreciate their many gifts, use them wisely, and emerge from adolescence full of strength. (Note: To start, we will meet every 2 weeks as mothers alone for six meetings, then we will add monthly gatherings for mothers and our daughters between the ages of 9 and 11.)
