Poor Tim doesn’t have much luck…

Posted on April 18, 2012 by jessicalfriend

Cyclist’s shouldn’t normally have to worry about gorillas, missiles or demolition balls… But the should be worried about HGVs!

Our long suffering cyclist, Tim, has been hit by everything going – but he has avoided large vehicles; help more cyclists avoid large vehicle collisions with our competition to find a new warning sign for the backs of HGVs and Buses!

Thank you to Bex, Tim and Gus for all their filming efforts!

InTANDEM Judge joins team in Cambridge for launch!

Gus gives Subash some advice on his entry in Cambridge...

International health and safety heavyweight launches search for safer cycling symbol.

The InTANDEM competition launches this April to reduce the number of cyclists killed or injured in collisions with lorries on Britain’s roads.

The InTANDEM Road Safety Competition is on the hunt for an original warning symbol to prevent these collisions, which now amounts to over 2,500 fatalities and serious injuries a year. With 20 per cent of cycle accidents in the capital currently involving Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV)[1], How’s My Driving? is urging both drivers and cyclists to enter designs, working together to maximise road safety.

Subash Ludhra, President of IOSH and InTANDEM judge, applauded the competition: “As a keen cyclist myself, having been knocked over by a vehicle, any initiative to help drivers and cyclists become more aware of each other on the roads that they have to share has got to be a good thing.”

Ludhra joined the InTANDEM team including, the ‘Gus the Gorilla’ mascot from the Youtube clip, on their launch road show in Cambridge, adding that the competition would: “help to reduce the unnecessary number of deaths and injuries each year on our roads. ”

The hazard symbol placed on the backs of HGVs will combat a common accident which occurs whilst turning left at a junction; cyclists are in danger of being crushed against the wheels of a large vehicle, if the driver cannot see the cyclist on their nearside. The new sign will advocate that extra care is needed when passing a large vehicle on the nearside.

Subash Ludhra will also be joined by judges Robert Smalley, chief driving examiner at RoSPA, creative director Gary Harringman at Studio Harringman and managing director Amanda Jackson at Tigerfish PR. The competition will also be backed with an online campaign to provide better education to road users on minimising HGV-related risks.

Supported by How’s My Driving?, the UK’s first driving feedback service, the winning entrant will receive £1000 for the most creative design. More details can be found on the competition’s webpage www.intandemcompetition.com, facebook www.facebook.com/InTANDEMComp or Twitter @InTANDEMComp.

Julian Huppert, MP for Cambridge, backs InTANDEM Competition

Posted on April 2, 2012 by jessicalfriend

Julian Huppert, MP for Cambridge, backs our InTANDEM Competition. We’re on the hunt for a new hazard symbol this April for the backs of HGVs to warn road users of the dangerous lorry risk zone.

    Julian Huppert, MP for Cambridge

Huppert, recently named MP of the month for his cycle safety campaign, said “This is an excellent competition which focuses on the real danger to cyclists from heavy lorries while at the same time making drivers and cyclists think about the action they need to take to minimise the risks.”

The hazard symbol will combat a common accident which occurs whilst turning left at a junction; cyclists are in danger of being crushed against the wheels of a large vehicle, if the driver cannot see the cyclist on their nearside. The new sign will advocate that extra care is needed when passing a large vehicle on the nearside.

The new symbol has answered Huppert’s call for better signage; “The sign, designed to compliment other lorry safety equipment such as sensors, turning alarms, extra mirrors and safety bars, could go a long way to saving lives.”

The winning design will be judged by Robert Smalley, Chief Driving Examiner for RosPA, Subash Ludhra, President of IOSH, Creative Director Gary Harringman, Studio Harringman and Managing Director Amanda Jackson, Tigerfish PR.

Supported by How’s My Driving?, the UK’s first driving feedback service, the winning entrant will receive £1000 for the most creative design.
